The Iams pet food scandal

I just received a newsletter from Healthy Happy dogs.com regarding Iams pet food, and the way they treat the dogs and cats they use for testing purposes. I did an internet search and found the following pertaining to Iam's answer to these charges which you can read here. Another article I found by Nuvo.net that gives an overview of the situation can be read here. One of my readers also informed me of an article on Peta, from the Poodle and dog blog which you can read here. But Peta is not the only organization speaking out against Iams. Another of my readers, Jan's funny farm, advised me of this article, entitled the Iam's Expose - to read it click here. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Here is the article from HealthHappyDogs.com:
"Iams Scandal

There are pet food manufacturers out there who profess to provide a superior product. They may even come highly recommended by your vet. And probably the product does contain superior ingredients to those cheap supermarket brands.

But at what price?

And by price here I'm not talking about the cash you outlay from you wallet for the product. No, I'm talking about societal cost, and specifically the cost incurred by animals just like your dog and mine.

Some of these animals pay with their lives.

Appalling and sickening, but unfortunately true.

PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) has uncovered a scandal involving Iams, one of the well-known, high-end pet food products which is sold in pet shops and vetinarians, and is often highly recommended by those professionals who we would think are in the know."

    Hi Chris and pet lovers,

    Please read this book:

Food Pets Die For, shocking facts about pet food. by Ann N. Martin.

Ann devotes a chapter about what she has researched with Pet Food Companies and what they do with and to animals to "test" or "improve" their food.

It's a truly shocking book and will change how any pet lover looks at what goes their pet's bowl and they will know that pet food giants do not "love" our pets or care about their well-being.

Chris, I'm sorry to have gone on so much about this but It's so important for pet lovers to know what goes on behind closed doors.

Thanks for standing up for Pets....

Thank you for this information, and also thank you Robin for the mention of the book.

That's terrible! I've read quite a lot about these dog foods and it's pretty scary to think that a lot of people do not know what they are feeding their pets. Thanks Chris for highlighting this and create more awareness!

Thanks all of you for your comments. I am not a fan of Peta. However, I am also not a fan of Iams. I faithfully fed all my pets Iams and Eukanuba since they came to live with us, thinking I was doing the best possible for them-- until last year. My dog Abby's skin and ear allergies had escalated to such a degree that the medication wasn't doing any good any more. I started researching diet, and didn't like what I found was in my petfoods, so I switched Abby to an all natural dry kibble, supplemented with homemade raw meat/eggs/bones/organ meat/vegetables. Abby's allergies disappeared within 2 months of changing her diet. I then switched all my pets to all natural, and I will never buy commercial pet food again.
Thanks again everyone for your comments.

oh this is a very disturbing article and post.

I have very occasionally bought Iams, because I thought it had a good name and good quality. But never will again.

At the moment Marvin is fed on Hills Science Diet, I am going to check in a moment, who actually makes that. He has it in kibble format, although there is tinned as well. He only has kibble, plus supplemented by raw eggs, brocolli, tinned sardines in sunflower oil, tinned tuna in sunflower oil, and good quality left overs from our meal. Added in with his kibble.

I only buy fresh meat from a local butcher and organic free range chicken for ourselves, so he has as far as I can see a very healthy diet. I am concerned now about the actual makers of the biscuits, Hills Science Diet, off to do some research.

Marvin has skin allergy probs but he is fine with these biscuits, and some others which are probably only in the UK, called James Wellbeloved.

Thanks again, Jeannie (Marvins Mama) ;0)

    Hi Marvin and Jeannie,
Yes, do check out Hills Science Diet. I used to feed it to my cats, but changed them to an all natural kibble along with supplemented raw food, and they are much healthier; shinier coat, cleaner teeth, far less shedding. I'm convinced it was eliminating the byproducts and chemicals in the old kibble that has helped. My oldest cat Jackie, now 19 is doing better at this year's check up than she was 2 years ago when I was told she was declining and organs were starting to fail.

Came across your blog- hope you don't mind I join in on the readings and comments =) .. I have known about Iams for some time [This also includes Eukanuba [sp?] as they are with the same company]- I have never and would never use it- nor would I ever recommend it. I am so happy the few vets I have worked for have never recommended Iams/Eukanuba to any of their clients. The undercover videos about iams [and all other animal testings] is truely a sad sight. =/

    Hi Katloveskritters!
Everyone is welcome here, thanks for stopping by. And thank you also for your comments - I think Iams used to be a good company, but no more.

I have red about IAM many years ago and have stop supporting them ever since.

I just can't imagine eating food that has caused so many of our kind to suffer so much.

It's so sad all this bad food, disguised as good food. Very misleading - the advertising, commercials, marketing. Robin is right that's a great book. Good advice on "what's really in your pet's food" googled as well.

    woofs, Johann

Glad to see you and your mum are back among the living and feeling better. Thanks for your comments.

Peta is a terrorist organization who's final plan is to turn everyone's animals loose and let them all run free while we all eat vegetables. They are extremists working hard to put farmers out of business. They have access to a lot of money and know how to mask and promote certain agendas effectively. I don't doubt that IAMs may be guilty of something but PETA is not an organization to support. An excellent exhaustive article was written for the New Yorker a few years ago about them and the president. Fanatic is too kind a word for her. Please do not believe every word they utter they have an agenda and it's not the one you think it is.
