Local kids help Humane Society

Our local newspaper reported on two area kids who asked that rather than receiving gifts for their birthday party this year, that donations be made to the Toledo Humane Society. I think it's wonderful that these two kids saw a need and acted on it. If more people had this selflessness and forethought, our animal shelters would have a much easier time of it. Most of the area animal shelters are overflowing with animals because more and more pet owners have lost their homes due to the mortgage interest rate hikes and have had to find living arrangements in which they can no longer keep their pets. So donations are needed now more than ever. Here is their story:

"Emilie and Jordan Cusick, sister and brother whose January birthdays are two days apart, have an unusual gift wish-list - pet food, chew toys, and other animal stuff.

The Sylvania Township children decided to forgo their birthday presents this year and instead asked people coming to their birthday party today to bring a donation for the Toledo Area Humane Society.
"We see strays or hurt dogs out in the street, especially now that it's cold, and the kids always want to help," said their mother, Sherrie Cusick."

The kids certainly are wonderful. Are there really so many pets homeless now because of the subprime problem?

Wow, what a wonderful thing for them to do! We definitely need more people like that!!

    Hi Happy,
Our local news has been reporting about it - apparently our area has been hard hit with people losing their homes, and therefore our shelters are packed to the gills because of it.
Thanks for dropping by to see us.

It is great to see those kids doing that. The newspaper reporting it reminds me of something my grandfather mentioned to me once.He said why do the newspapers only print the bad things kids have done, and not the good.

    It really made me think.

I always love hearing stories like this- its nice to know that some kids would rather help animals than recieve that hot new bike, or that brand new video game, etc. I know back when I was 15, while all the kids slept in and hung out all day on their summer break, I volunteered daily at the SPCA. =)

    Hi Steve,
I think the newspapers and the media in general focus on the bad that kids do. I guess that's why it caught my eye and I wanted to post about it. Thanks for stopping by.

    Hi Kat,
That's wonderful that you volunteered when you were a teenager. I'm sure it helped make you the person you are now, so caring and helping the animals. Keep up the great work.
