Memories of Jackie

Six weeks ago, my little Jackie was a happy cat who ate everything I put in front of her and doing all her normal activities. We went to the vet for her yearly checkup, where it was determined she had hyperthyroidism and was put on medication. Two weeks ago a follow-up blood test was done, and the vet doubled the dosage of the medication. This started Jackie on a downward spiral which she never recovered from, and we lost the battle early Thursday morning.

Jackie was at least 11 years old when she came to live with us 8 years ago. She has always been one of the sweetest natured cats I've ever seen, and she was that way right up to the end. She had so many cute quirky things she did over the years, as all cats do. One of my favorites was how she'd open our bi-fold doors every day - she figured out long ago that she had to pull in the center of the doors in just the right place to get them to open. And then there's our dresser which has outer doors with pull-out drawers behind them. Jackie figured out where the magnets were that kept the doors closed, and would open the doors from underneath, then pull out the same drawer every time, along with the same pair of shorts. Once done, she would walk away proudly. She also loved to sit above us on the back of the couch, and burrow her nose into the top of our hair. She had a unique way of running - actually bouncing no matter how fast she was moving - we called it "High Steppin." And she loved to snuggle up under my chin, whether I was sitting straight up in a chair, or laying in bed - she wasn't close enough until her whiskers were hitting me in the face. Every night like clockwork she would show up and sit on the arm of the couch next to my husband for her evening rub.

We have so many great memories of her in the 8 short years we got to spend with her. Needless to say she leaves a big hole in our household, and we miss her dearly. Jackie had lost most of her hearing the last couple of years and she wasn't as active as she used to be, so it's comforting to know she's happy and healthy again and running with all the other kitties and pups who've crossed the bridge before her.

Rest in peace my sweet girl.

So sorry to hear the sad news. Whenever I think of a lost pet, this line comes to mind...

"There's a hole in your heart where Jackie passed through,
When you said goodbye part of you went, too."

It's from a poem I'd read online that expresses the precise feeling so well.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear you lost your Jackie. Sounds like she was a great cat. I had to laugh when you talked about how she opened all those doors, especially the dresser door and then pulled out shorts and just walked away! Ha! She was cute.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It helps to know you care. I'll get around to visiting you all when I feel more up to it - my heart's just not in it right now as I'm sure you understand all too well if you've ever lost a pet. Thanks again.

My heart goes out to you. It is the saddest thing when a beloved pet dies. We lost our Izzy (a Keeshound Spitz) 10 days before Christmas last year. She had lupus and no matter what the vet did her body could just not fight off infection anymore. I stayed with her as she was put down and I brought her back here and buried her in one of her favorite places in the yard. We have made a beautiful memorial for her. We miss her everyday.
When a pet dies I consider that pet a beloved family member. The greiving process can be very hard. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Oh we are so sad upon hearing of our loss..Jackie was a very sweet kitty and we can imagine how much you will miss her in the coming days. We lost our girlcat Forest too recently and can only say that the pain gets less with time. Fond memories of your time together help in the healing process too.
Sending you lots of love and purrs from all of us...

Thank you everyone for your comments about our Jackie. It is starting to get a bit easier for us, but every room reminds us of her in some way. For such a tiny kitty she left a huge hole behind. Thanks again.

We are so sorry Jackie had to go to the bridge. We wish she could have taught us how to open the bi-fold doors in Mom's closet. There's lots of good places to curl up in there. We know she must have been very happy with you since she was always high steppin!

Oh, we are so sad for you. This is a beautiful tribute to Jackie. 8 years can pass very quickly, but we're so glad you had that many years since you adopted an older cat. You must have taken very good care of her. (Must have been the healthy doses of love.)

    We're very sorry.
