Please help save innocent dogs in Ohio

I just learned about a horrible bill pending in my state of Ohio that if passed will mean the end of all pit bulls in the state- owners will have 90 days to surrender their pets for euthanasia. This is such senseless legislation - why punish an entire breed of dogs because people like Michael Vick have exploited their dogs and used them in criminal acts. Dogs are not born vicious, they are made that way by circumstances beyond their control. In fact they have already been made victims, and now the state of Ohio wants to further victimize them. I know several people who have pit bulls and they are loving and loyal family pets. Even if a dog is used in dog fighting, once rescued they can be rehabilitated - just watch The Dog Whisperer and see how Cesar Millan has taken society's throw-aways and helped them become whole again, ready to love and be loved by someone.

I read about this pending legislation on Karen and Gerard Zemek's blog, and if you'd also like to voice your opposition to this bill, CLICK HERE for a list of email addresses. On the Zemek's blog is a letter that a friend of Karen's wrote which is worth reading. She makes a very good point that the government doesn't round up and kill every law abiding citizen just because there are other people who break the laws, so why should they be allowed to do this to man's best friend. You don't have to be a resident of Ohio to stand up for these innocent dogs. An out-of-state friend of mine has voiced her opposition by telling them she will no longer drive through Ohio or purchase gas here for their gas-gusling RV.

And remember, if this gets passed in Ohio, maybe your state will be next.

It's not the breed they should get rid of -- it's the unscrupulous owners who train their Pits to be killers! Breed Specific Legislation makes me SO MAD!

In Ohio, we already have laws regarding the ownership of pitbulls (owners must have fences, extra insurance, etc.) Unfortunately if this law passes it will the many responsible and law abiding pit bull owners crimminals. They will be forced to give up the well behaved pit bull dogs that you'd want to be in your neighborhood only to be be killed. The pit bull ban will do nothing that hasn't already been done (or in reality not done) to curb the problem of irressponsible pit bull (and other breed) dog owners who allow and encourage their dogs to behave in such a way that the dogs are agressive or worse to humans.

I read about this on the Zemek's blog and just can't believe that a state would actually propose this. The few that are trained to be bad do not outweigh the many Pitties that are wonderful, family pets. Education about the breed is needed, not for them to be banned.

Are you sure this is current? We blogged about this bill back in May and it was supposedly changed in June. We're a bit confused.

thanks everyone for your comments. And Jan's Funny Farm - I got this from the Zemek's blog posted late last week, and in her post she states she received the information by email just last week from a co-worker who is fighting this legislation.

It is horrific. And if it passes in one state then it will happen again.

Whether the bill current or not, every state is coming up with more and more crazy legislation plans to ban certain breeds in one way or another. It's only getting worse. Unfortunately the people who come up with these bills don't know anything about dogs.
