Poisonous foods for pets
I've put together a comprehensive list of all the human foods that can cause a toxic reaction in cats and dogs. Please note that a toxic reaction doesn't always show symptoms right away, but over time will affect the animal's liver. This is the case for example with chocolate. Many pet owners say they have fed their pet chocolate for years with no problem, but that doesn't mean damage isn't being done. As for garlic, I realize that some pet foods include it, and also supplements are given as a flea/tick prevention. But it is also shown on numerous toxic lists, so when there is any doubt on it's safety, I have put it on my list.
Foods toxic to pets:
alcoholic beverages
apple cores
apricot pits
baby food (can contain onion powder)
broccoli in large amounts
caffeine
candy
cherry pits
chocolate
coffee grounds, beans & tea (because of caffeine)
eggplant (cats only)
elderberry (cats only)
fat trimmings
fish - raw
garlic
grapes
hops
human vitamins with iron
liver in large amounts
macadamia nuts
mushrooms
mustard seeds
nutmeg
onions
peach pits
pear cores
plum pits
potatoes - raw peels and green areas
raisins
salt
spoiled & moldy food
tobacco products
tomatoes (cats only)
turkey skin
walnuts
Xylitol sugar substitute
yeast dough

This is too long a list for me to remember so I just don't let my cats have any people food. I take no chances with my pets--am I overly protective? Oh well, so be it.
Good list. And I also think it best to let dogs eat only food meant for pets. i get so angry at people who say their dogs have eaten ___ for years with no ill effects. One of my aunts said that about chicken bones until one of her dogs died a horrible death.
Oh no! This is terrible and I had no idea there were so many foods that could harm pets! I am going to print it out and put on the fridge. Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing that list!

Thank you for letting people know what can harm us, so please don't feed it to us. Another one is even just plain peanuts, that is a no no too.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that while I am still recovering from my shoulder surgery, and getting better every day, I still can't type for long periods of time without pain. That said, I enjoyed your post and am glad I dropped by.

Mitch better start eating less apples! It's going to break his heart but we want him to live a long time!
Thank you for this valuable information!
Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch
Interesting list. I would have never imagined apple cores and mushrooms. I learned quite a bit.
I didn't know about the broccoli. I have some broccoli baby food that I hide Blitzkrieg's meds in. Looks like I'll be donating the unopened jars to the food pantry.
If I don't let my dog eat the core (I imagine it's the seeds that are bad?) can I still give him apples?
PS:The only baby food I give my dog, is the vegtable flavors that say "veg, water" as ingredients.
Thanks everyone for your comments.
Condo Blues - re: your question about apples - apple seeds are toxic as well as the core which contains cyanogenic glycosides, which results in cyanide poisoning. From what I've read the apples themselves are ok but can cause diarrhea. And I've also read to be leary of baby food of any flavor because it can contain onion powder which is toxic to pets. Hope this helps.

What about coconut is it poisonous?
I haven't found anything that shows coconut is poisonous to pets. In fact, coconut oil is helpful for skin problems. Here's a link on the subject that may help you:
