Dog flu warning

According to Dogster, there is an outbreak of dog flu in the Colorado Springs, Colorado area. They have closed the doors on 2 dog daycare centers as this strain of flu is highly contagious. The contagious period is usually the first 2 to 5 days of the infection, and it just takes a dog sneezing around your dog to pass it on.

And if it's in Colorado it may soon hit your area, so I wanted to pass along the symptoms so you can be on guard in case your dog shows any signs. If your dog is coughing, not eating and not feeling well, contact your veterinarian. Dog flu is a respiratory virus for which there is no vaccine. Fortunately it is rarely fatal, but it does make a dog very sick, and can be fatal if not treated with antibiotics.

Good Grief! I didn't know dogs could get the flu. Poor things, if they feel as bad as I feel when I get it.

Thanks for letting us know. I remember when that happened in Tennessee a few years ago and doggie daycares had to close for a while. Sometimes you just have to be very careful.
    Thanks again for the warning.

Good information. It'll help in early detection, if unfortunately, the dogs get infected. Thanks.

Aww, poor doggies. At least it doesn't sound any worse than the flu that humans get.

Thanks for the tip. I hope it doesn't become an epidemic. I think I better start to like chicken soup.

    Dear Anonymous,
I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It's so sad to lose a pet, especially to something that seems as simple as "the flu" - it is very scary. My sympathies to you and your family at this terrible time, and I hope that soon you'll be able to move past your grief and remember all the good times you had with your dog. You're in my thoughts.
    Chris

FYI - There is indeed a vaccine for this! Ask your vet if you're concerned, especially if you deal with rescues at all or your dog(s) regularly comes into proximity of other dogs, like a dog park, doggy daycare, etc.
