The Abyssinian is one of the most popular short hair cat breeds. The breed is believed to have come from an English Tabby bred with an Egyptian cat and taken back to England by a British soldier.
The Abyssinian's body is medium length, well muscled and has a fairly long tail, and short fine coat. The back of the hind legs and pads are always darker than the rest of the body. They can be reddish brown, yellowish brown, blue or light cream. Kittens are all born with dark coats and over several months lighten to their final color. They shed very little.
Abyssinians are intelligent, willful and extroverted, and usually too busy exploring to be good lap cats. They need a lot of daily contact with the family to be happy and can get depressed without it. They usually get along well with other cats, are great with children, love exploring and heights but don't take unnecessary risks, and are not very vocal.
Abyssinians have a life span of 15 or more years, and are more prone to gingivitis than other cat breeds.

i love these cats. I heard they like to 'play' with water too. Unusual for cats...
I had an Abysinnian named Wolfgang until he passed away from liver problems (he was in his 20's). He was wonderful and sweet and slept under the covers with us every night. Would love to adopt another one but will not buy one-only if I can find one at a shelter. Great breed!
