Getting a Dog

This guest post from Josue Nichols

My husband has been talking to the kids about getting a dog for some time now and he’s convinced they’re ready to get one and really take care of it. I’m not so sure. I think I’m just really afraid that we’ll get a great dog and I’ll be the one that has to walk him and bathe him and all kinds of stuff which is something I just don’t have time to do when I’ve got a full time job! We recently got cannonsatellite at the house so I’ve been making the kids watch a lot of Animal Planet and Cesar Millanwhich I think is really making an impression on them about how difficult dogs can be. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they’re amazing, but when it comes to taking responsibility for stuff like a dog I just don’t know if they’re mature enough to accept it all yet! I told my husband if we get a dog and they don’t take care of it I’m going to make him do it!

How old are your children? Kids like the idea of having a dog, at first. And it has been my experience that you are right...the dog will become your responsibility. Wait awhile, until you can accept a dog, care for him, vet him, walk him and most of all love him.

I think you have every right to be concerned. The last thing you want to happen is to find out later that your family cannot take care of a dog and will have to try and find another responsible new owner. Too many dogs get dumped at the shelters because new owners were too ignorant about the realities and responsibilities of dog ownership. If you have doubts, then your family may not be ready. Get them educated first and when it's time, then go for it, but not before.
