Flea treatment for your cat

Today we have a guest article by Alvina Lopez on an important topic, non-chemical flea treatments you can make yourself for your cat.  I hope you find it helpful.

DIY Flea Treatment: 3 Safe and Natural Ways to Alleviate Kitty Pests

Fleas and ticks are some of the biggest nuisances when it comes to owning and caring for a pet. Not only are these little parasites creepy and just plain gross, they are also a serious threat to your pet's and your own health. Fleas and ticks can harbor dangerous diseases that can harm both you and your kitty. While there are several different store-bought methods for parasite extermination, many of these methods involve harsh chemicals that can be equally as dangerous to you and your beloved pet. Rather than purchasing expensive and potentially hazardous shampoos, powders, and collars from the pet store, try making them yourself at home using safe and natural ingredients.

Homemade Flea Collar
Flea collars are a common method of warding off dangerous and bothersome pests. However, most store bought collars use dangerous chemicals that are bad for your pet and you. Rather than spending money on a flea collar at the store, try making one at home. First, buy a regular cat collar from the store that you can use as your homemade flea collar. Next, mix two tablespoons of diluted almond oil with cinnamon, rosemary, wormwood, peppermint, or cedar wood. You can choose one of these ingredients or a combination of several. These are all natural flea repellent oils and spices. Mix the oils and spices together and then soak the collar in them. If your cat or anyone in your household is pregnant, you should not use this method of flea repellent. Put the soaked collar on your cat after it has dried out some and enjoy a flea free kitty.

Citrus Wash
Citrus is a natural flea deterrent and a wonderful element for keeping your pet clean. A Lemon based wash is a great DIY shampoo for your cat. Combine four sliced lemons, one tablespoon of salt, and six cups of water in a pot. Boil all of these ingredients together on your stovetop for about two minutes and then remove from the heat and let steep for about 24 hours. Once the mixture has thoroughly steeped, wash your cat as you usually would and use the lemon water as an after rinse. This rinse is great for your cat's skin and can be used daily. You can also try putting this mixture in a spray bottle and spraying on your cat's fur daily to ward off bugs and irritated skin.

Herbal Flea Power
Flea powders are a common solution for homes with a parasite problem. However, many flea powders that you purchase at the store can contain harmful and risky chemicals. Make this herbal flea powder at home to avoid using any risky chemicals or pesticides. Combine rosemary, fennel, yellow dock, wormwood, and eucalyptus in equal portions. You should crush these herbs together into a powder. All of these herbs are good for your pet's fur and skin and naturally deter fleas. Sprinkle this crushed mixture onto your cat's fur as you would do with a store bought powder solution. While some of these homemade solutions may not be quite as effective as home bought products, they are safer and cheaper to use.
